Hello to everyone here. I recently discovered this forum while searching for information on the subject of stuttering.

I am 22 years old and currently work as a self employed window cleaner in the Birmingham area of the UK. I first started stuttering when I was about 9 while still in primary school. The stutter was not too bad during this period but it became worse when I went to secondary school. It has been a problem ever since. For the most part I suffer from the block version of stuttering where you know what you want to say but can't force the word out. I often try to substitute words for others that I find easier to say and use lots of "um" etc while talking. With that being said I should make it clear that my stutter is only really a problem with strangers, people I don't know well or authority figures. When talking to family and friends it is not too bad really.

I don't know if this is the wise thing to do but I don't like people knowing I have a stutter so I try and hide it as much as possible. To people that don't know me well this may make me appear as though I am being rude, arrogant or as if I simply have nothing to say. Because of this I don't make a good first impression when meeting new people.

Hello!

I used to live in Birmingham. I'm pretty new here too, I found this site by searching on google.

My speech pathologist tells me I should tell people that I stutter when I speak on the phone but I feel weird. I just want to be able to communicate without starting the conversation with "I stutter, please be patient". I rarely stutter with my husband but like you in certain situation and people I stutter a lot.

I do the same thing. I don't like people to know I stutter so I'll end up not saying anything to them, and then they think I'm being rude or that I'm a jerk. It's a hard habit to get out of, but I try to remember that it's better for somebody to know I'm a stutterer than to think I'm a rude, arrogant person.

hi clocks,

im 22 aswel. Trying to hide your stammer must be difficult being self employed.

What do you fear about people knowing you sometimes are dysfluent?

If it helps when i used to think i may have trouble talking to someone for whatever reason i would tell them i am a little dysfluent at times - then i was more relaxed.

It sounds crazy but people are really cool about it and say i would have never known.

hope you enjoy forum.

In my case it is not that hard being self employed as my business partner does the lions share of the talking. If the customers speak to me though then I will speak back but I will try and keep it as brief as possible while remaining polite.

I don't really know why I try and hide the stutter. I guess I am a bit embarrassed by it but I know I should probably try and get over that.

hellooooooo! i like your name! rather inventive! i always say umm a lot too lol it makes things easier, but i think i mainly have issues when talking with friends but that could be i notice it more because i talk to them more. window cleaning, i always wanted to be one when i was younger! now i just settle for flirting with my grandmas window cleaner whenever hes working and i'm there!
