I am a 32 yr old stay at home mom of a three week old baby girl from Pennsylvania USA and I do not stutter. I have a friend who does however and he has let his fears cause problems between us so I came here to get some advice on how I may be able to make him feel less frightened and afraid.

Hey!
I think the best thing to do is to talk about the stammer/stutter to your friend. Don't say some thing like 'You know what, your stutter is every bad'. Say something like, I don't know, a fact on stuttering. Like (here's a good one) more man stutter then woman.
Other topics to talk about is phones, groups for people who stammer/stutter, help-lines. If your friend daesn't know anything about selfhelp groups and help-lines look on google and search for 'stutter help' or something like that
I swear! Just talking about stuttering makes a stutterer alot less frightened and afraid to talk because he knows that you don't care if he stutters so he'll say to himself 'Great! He daesn't care if I stutter because he talked to me about it!' He may stutter more, but at lest he'll stutter with "confidantce"!
I hope that helped!
Love, Mary x

I have told my friend before that it is nothing to be ashamed of because no matter how much trouble he had I always knew what he was trying to tell me but unfortunately he finally let his fears shut me out. Maybe someone can talk to him because I have tried to be as supporetive as I can to him and he hasn't spoken to me in a couple months. We even spoke on the phone and his stutter is very severe but no matter what I never finished what he was trying to tell me I always let him work it out for himself. I just wish he wasn't so afraid. He is 51 and he shouldn't feel ashamed especially when someone like me cares enough to help never having dealt with someone who stuttered before.

It makes me sad because we were close friends and then he shut me out completely. He had severe facial and body tics that when his stutter got extremely bad he explained for him it was like having epilepsy cause his whole body would go into cionvulsions. Maybe someone can talk to him for me his email is sssteve1953@yahoo.com and maybe he will come around. I even found video clips on the internet with people dealing with the same bodily tics that he had and it still didnt seem to boost his self esteem did I do something wrong?
