I'm new here but the stuttering has been with me a long time. I have the unfortunate problem of enjoying a pint of guinness (the lovely Black Stuff) which like Marmite is an acquired taste as those who have tried it will know. The next problem is that Guinness is a word i have struggled with. I stand at the bar most times observing how many people are around, and then the coast is clear i'm next to be served and no ones around. as the person in front of me is paying for their drink it seems like someone upstairs is watching and sends people to the bar in their droves, as though to watch me stumble over one word that i enjoy drinking so much!!!!!!! :D . Catching the bus going to school and saying the bus fare was also a problem. I just find the Guinness incidents annoying as i'm not going to drink something else for an easy life.

Wondering what things and situations annoy you, apart from using the phone, talking in public, ordering at a table etc .............................................

Hi, welcome.

Actually i used to feel the same about talking in public, looking around to see if the 'coast was clear' then go up to a counter or something.

I try to not care anymore and at times i just go for it and if i get stuck then i get stuck.

I was buying a stamp book the other day andi got stuck asking for it, but i didnt really care because the people in there didn't really knowme, i was just going to get the book and get out of there! lol.

But it'd be different going down to your local, where im sure people people know u..

But you're right, it may be annoying, but you shouldn't compensate what you want just for a few seconds of embarassment.

Easier said - or maybe not. :P

That's why I drink tequila :D

My job requires I engage in public speaking about 4 to 5 times a day and I do it because I like it . . . not because I am ordered to do it. I have gotten to the point of not letting anything annoy me. I've been doing it too long to let it get me down. The funny looks, the ignorance, and the idiotic behavior of others really don't negatively affect anymore. For this reason I will do my best to ensure that my 4-year old son (who stutters as well) faces life with the same perspective I do in regards to stuttering.

I like Rikards myself and many times I do have a problem saying it. I like to order food, when at hooters, by pointing at what I want. Today, I don't care, because chances are you won't see those people again in the lineup again. I met my wife's cousin last night and her new husband. I stuttered right in front of him, and that didn't stop all the laughter going on at the time. They were talking about owing mid 80's Chyrsler cars with the 318 and how you can see the gas guage move. I laughted, and said, I own an 78 lincoln, (stuttering, when getting started), with an 460 big block and you want to see the gas guage move, ride with me. I like my Rikards and even when I still have problems saying it, I will order it. Regular Canadian Beer, just doesn't cut it anymore no matter how easy they are to say.

If I ever have to order guinness, I stand by the pump and still try and say it, but now we can get cold guinness and I find it easier to order cold guinness instead of warm stodgy guinness. I have trouble with beers like michelob, not stuttering but how the hell do you say it, is it mickelob, is it michelob and I can tell you I have had a few funny looks when asking for it.
I will only stutter in bars if I think to myself that I will but its not the end of the world if I do.

Well, in my very humble opinion, the interviewer sounds like a complete prick and I wouldnt work for the dick as I would end up smacking them.
You will find someone who wants you so bad that they wont even consider the stutter.

Dman sorry to hear you didn't get the job. I had a similar experience where the interviewer stopped looked at me and said "why do you talk like that?". I just wanted to disappear. Needles to say I didn't get the job. If you have any previous coworkers/bosses that can vouch for you, I'd say have them write letters of recommendations and make sure they mention your stutter.

In regards to the OP. I've had bartenders yell at me for taking too long to place an order "I haven't got all day? How much did you drink ?? GOD!"

I have trouble pronouncing certain words starting with the letter M.

Malibu and coke is one of my favourite drinks...but I have to resort to an alternative drink so I can avoid embarrasing myself.

It's not just that I will stutter with the words...but sometimes, I'll just completely freeze.

Regarding interviews, I've always been reasonably ok. Having said that, one guy said to me "I'll treat you like you're normal like everybody else - ok?" WTF does that mean????

Nowadays, there is no public asking situation that I would shy away from - what doesn't kill you makes you is my way of looking at it.

So . . . that's my problem??? I'm not normal!!! ;)

AH, normal is subjective is it not?

How many people here:

a) Want to be normal like other people (whatever that may be?) or

b) Are happy to be different from the crowd in their own wee ways - and I DON'T mean anything to do with speech?

I know the feeling as if stuttering wasnt bad enough for me I have a hard time carrying out my voice in a place where its very noisy and loud..So I have to deal with that and stuttering so trying to order anything is so hard..but it feels good that I am not the only one...which alot of the times I feel like the only one where I live anyway

 I can Identify with this thread. I am "pigheaded" too; if that is the right phrase? I refuse to go into a shop for a can of coke, & come out with a packet of washing powder all because I can't say "a can of coke please". I'd rather struggle with the block than waste my money on something I did not want in the first place!!!

WTF is "Normal?" Is it normal to be laughed at, rejected, fingers pointed at us, have no self esteem, self confidence & be treated like aliens from Outer Space. I think not & to try to shield ourselves, we are forced into isolation.(& hope with all our might we are not verbally attacked.) I've been a loner all of my life;I & others like me must have missed a lot in life. My god, I swear that speaking situations like the ones described in this thread are NOT going to get the better of me!
