I am fairly new here, so I don't know if this has been previously asked.

I perceive we have a broad range of professions/employments here on the forum I'd like to know what each and everyone of you do. There is, however, an ulterior motive for my asking this. Within a couple of terms I will begin the dissertation phase of my PhD and I am looking for a good (and "close to home") topic. Since I joined this forum I have thought about researching stuttering and how it affects career decisions and the impact on issues such as promotions, perquisites, etc. I turn to you for your thoughts.

Ok, so, I will start: I have been a member of the U.S. Armed Forces for 22 years. The first 10 years I was enlisted achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. The latter 12 years I have been as an officer and I am currently a Major. All the time I have been a Personnel/Human Resource guru. Although I am very comfortable with my stuttering it was a deciding factor in my not becoming an aviator. I felt that there is just too much communication to do and in combat (or emergencies) communication is fast and furious and my stutter could have gotten in the way . . . or worst yet, could have gotten somebody killed.

My two hobbies are PC gaming (which requires no verbal contact other than yelling at the computer monitor) and playing & home recording music, I am a bass player (which also requires almost no verbal contact with others unless I am recording with a group – I have not done so in close to 15 years).

How about you all? I am NOT asking for personal information such as educational level or salary. I would just to know what you do on and off duty and why. In advance I thank you for your comments/input.

Cheers!!!

Heres mine.

I have been working in IT since I was 18, working my way up from general dogsbody to shift leader to team leader to supervisor where I had two people working under me. I then left there and in my new company where I still work I was a technical support analyst, looking after the users, hardware upgrades, software upgrades. I am now an Systems manager, look after disaster recovery, maintenance, mobile phones, LANS, WANS and anything IT. I am on the phone a lot of my day or dealing with local users fixing problems, also I am first contact with our French head office.

Hobbies, apart from spending quality time with my family, I enjoy going to the gym and especially on the treadmill and cross trainer. Outside of the gym, I go on bike rides and try and keep fit as much as I can, but my family come first all the time.

Unfortunately, not very musical or good at team based sports, like football or rugby but I still enjoy taking part.

Already then, my turn.
I graduated in 1985, went into school for forestry in 1986 and started working in Forestry in 1987. I started off as a compass man, timber cruised, regeneration surveys, cutblock layouts, tree planting quality checks, stand tending quality checks, wildland firefighters. Had some pretty wild helicopters pilots, somewhere Vietnam vets and they can put you into some pretty tight spots. I had training in the use of GPS and GIS and their software. Today I moniter about 15-20 projects a year, so I talk on the phone a lot and travel a lot, when we have the money of course.

My family comes first of course, so I use to be an very active hunter, almost every weekend, I'm in the bush. Every since my girls where born, I can count on one hand on how many times I went out. I enjoy hiking, camping, I draw with pencil, taking pictures, going to auto show and shines, and four-wheeling with my truck. I enjoy watching Hockey, enjoy most team sports, got no talent, but just having fun. I enjoy music mostly early 90's to the 50's, can't play myself, can sing a little between yawns. Love Star Trek, got all the original and next generation series and have all the movies. Enjoy Star Wars, Lord of the Rings (got them all on DVD) and most Science Fiction movies and action. Enjoy watching Most Haunted and someday I will have proof of Big Foot. Well, the list is pretty long, so I'll stop there.

Hi, everyone. I'm 22 years old student in English and I'm graduating next month. I used to work as a private tutor as well as a teacher for 2 years. I didn't stutter much when teaching (perhaps because I spoke slowly) and my students liked me. My dream is to become a teacher and an interpreter but I can't do that right now. I have intention of spending one or two years on doing some spech therapy (I haven't found one that works for me).
I have been working as an editor for a cable television company and the job is well-paid. It is a good temporary job but not my dream.
If I weren't a stutterer, I would be very successful and famous by now (because I have a gift in languistics and a good appearance).
It is good and necessary that more public attention be drawn to stuttering as a big problem seriously affecting millions of people's lives. I wish you success with your project.

I now have an look like yellow lab, I saved him from the tranfer station, garbage dump, and his healthy now and one of the best dog alarms I had in a long time.

I was a greenkeeper for 11 years before taking the plunge and running my own business.
I used to have a lot of hobbies - mountain biking, mountain/hill running, mountain walking/climbing - but since starting my own business they have all been ignored. Very sad. And I feel soooooo unfit.

I finished uni a couple of months ago and I officially graduate in about a week! I recently got a job as an administrator for social services in London. It's only temporary right now but I hope it goes permanent. I don't really have one specific career that I wanna go into, but I want to try out lots of different jobs - such as a job in travel (eg air hostess), a sushi chef, a motorcyle courier/truck driver/train driver...and eventually I would like to go back to uni, prolly to do an MA in Gender Studies. I would like to live abroad a fair amount too.

My hobbies include travel, reading, going to the cinema, taking long aimless walks around London while listening to music.

I am Laurie and am 26. I am an elementary teacher and have taught for the two past years. I rarely stutter when I am teaching and it has never been an issue in a review or evaluation. I would like to eventually be a teacher for the deaf.

In my free time I enjoy taking walks with my dog, Jake, spending time with friends and family, reading and watching movies.
