View Full Version : Stuttering - a "Habit"?!

Hello,
On the BBC programme "Lost For Words" one part of the programme followed a gentleman who attended a specialist speech therapy course. The person who co-ordinated the course said in her opening introduction, "Remember you do not have a disease, you have a habit".

Now I'm sure she has the best of intentions and does a lot of good for people who stammer but I seriously disagree with this statement. I believe that there is a problem with the way that my brain produces speech and so I find the proposition that my stutter is purely the result of a bad "habit" slightly condescending.

I am a bright person in a very high profile job and I would like to think that if my stutter were purely a bad "habit", I would be intellectual enough to combat this like any other habit or addiction. I would be interested in other peoples views and whether anyone who is successfully combating stuttering every really feels completely at ease? I am coping fairly well with my stutter and have long periods of fluent speech but I never feel completely at ease and speech still takes a lot of concentration. My only explanation for this is that there must be a fundamental difference in the way my brain works.

Cheers,
Riverman.
