I'm 47, I'm an artist, I'm a Creative Director for a large media company. I 'm a College Instructor. I'm a father. I'm a husband. I coach soccer and baseball. I'm the second oldest sibling in a very large family. I'm sarcastic, funny and have a pretty warped, but realistic, veiw of the world. Music is a huge part of my life. I'm a gardener. I'm a loyal friend... did I mention I stutter? Always have, always will, so what.
I'm probably fluent 90% of the time the other 10% when I'm tired, aggrevated or unfocused on my speech, forget about it. It's hard work, but when I want I can control my speech. I speak slow and delberatly, but I speak.
My take on the whole stuttering thing is this...once I stopped caring about what others thought about me (my stuttering) things got a whole lot easier for me. (I know this concept is a reach for those of you under 20 because you'd be obsessing about this even if you didn't stutter.)
Everyone says to relax, but how can you when you feel as if all eyes and the weight of the world are on you. You stutter, you're trying to work through it, everyone's going to have to wait for those words to work there way out, that's all there is to it.
Most people have got more patience and are more sympathetic than you know. Those who snicker or are unsympathetic aren't worth a second thought.
Stutterers look at their speech as annoying and assume the rest of mankind does the same. Loose that thinking and relaxing comes a whole lot easier.
Never think of yourself as cursed or handicapped!!!!!!
Is stuttering mental or physical manifestation? We're all different, but cutting through the mind games we play with ourselves leads to great progress.
That's my speech (kind of long-winded sorry). If you're looking for some tough love you know where to find me.
(I have some good techniques for speaking to large audiences if you find yourself in that situation.)
Peace to you all.
David
